There has been a lot of talk about the future Raleigh city manager, the search and communication with city staff. I thought I might discuss the balance I try to follow as a city councilor in a city rapidly growing and expanding.
I was quoted in the Raleigh Public Record as saying that if the city council has to be involved in day-to-day operations, then there’s a leadership problem and that “The council is at its best when it’s looking five years out.” I stand by this statement.
Being your city councilor is an honor that I have been blessed with for the past four years. It is a balance to help assign a path for the next few years while also helping residents with questions they have today. That’s why communication with our Interim City Manager Perry James and our future city manager is imperative to help today’s concerns without getting in the way of city operations.
Over the next couple months I will post more of my thoughts on the search and the city’s performance.
